Supergiant Games has rolled out the third major update for Hades 2, further expanding the game’s rich mythology and gameplay. This update introduces Ares, the Greek god of war, to the pantheon of deities, offering his iconic boons and blessings to aid players as they fight their way through the underworld and beyond. Just like other immortals, Ares will smarm at you from afar while bestowing powerful buffs that enhance your combat abilities.
Additionally, a new familiar has been added to assist with your journey: Gale, a polecat whose primary function is to boost dodge chance and movement speed. These are crucial buffs, especially for players tackling the game's new surface route toward Mount Olympus, which now includes a "final confrontation". This update hints at a big showdown, and for those familiar with Greek mythology, the gurgling scaly appendage teased in the trailer offers a strong clue as to what— or rather, who— the final boss might be. If you're unfamiliar, let's just say this boss is both huge and definitely a force to be reckoned with.
New Features and Enemies
Apart from the big-name additions, this update also brings new enemies to battle, including a jellyfish foe in Oceanus and a massive creature in the Rift of Thessaly. These new threats promise to keep players on their toes and spice up the game’s combat encounters.
Players can also expect to experience more of the story’s depth with the introduction of new story events, dialogue, and character interactions. Highlights include a sing-song with Artemis, the leafy hunter goddess, as well as new tarot card artwork at the Altar of Ashes, where you prep your passive skills before embarking on each run.
In true Hades fashion, there are also some quirky updates that will keep fans entertained. Notably, Melinoë—daughter of Persephone—now occasionally covers up the family portrait in her tent after brooding too much. And my personal favorite patch note? “Fixed Icarus missing his targets unexpectedly (unless you're his father and expect disappointment).”
What's Next for Hades 2?
Looking ahead, Supergiant Games is already working on the next major update, which will focus on mixing up boss battles to bring more variety to repeated runs, as well as expanding on character relationships. However, players will have to wait a few months for this update to arrive, with no specific 1.0 release date yet announced.
Supergiant has been clear about their vision for Hades 2, noting that while the core structure of the Underworld and Surface routes is now fully intact, their next goal is to fill out the game’s content categories. They are committed to finishing what they’ve started, but the journey is far from over.
Final Thoughts
Hades 2 continues to grow into an expansive and deeply engaging roguelike, with its intricate mythology, powerful gods, and unique gameplay. While the 1.0 release is still some ways off, this update provides a sense of closure for players eager to experience the final confrontation atop Mount Olympus. But if you're waiting for that final release—well, it looks like you'll have to wait longer.
Until then, enjoy the new content, and as always, keep dashing your way through the underworld and beyond.
