Lots of Characters Returned for ‘SNL’s’ 50th Anniversary: Why We Wish These Beloved Classics Were Included

The SNL 50th Anniversary Special was an exciting trip down memory lane for longtime fans of the iconic NBC sketch show. A mix of classic SNL characters and newer hits kept audiences laughing, with standout moments like Mike Myers’ Linda Richman and Marcello Hernández’s Domingo introducing us to his "hot brothers." But as with any anniversary special, some fan-favorite sketches and characters were conspicuously missing, leaving viewers wishing for a more comprehensive throwback.

While it was impossible to feature every memorable moment from the show’s storied history (We miss you, Chris Kattan/Mr. Peepers!), here are some iconic characters and sketches that definitely deserved a spot in the celebration:

1. Wayne’s World

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reunited for a Wayne’s World sketch during SNL's 40th anniversary, so maybe the producers didn’t want to repeat that magic so soon. But let’s be real—a "party on" moment featuring Wayne and Garth would have been the ultimate nostalgic treat for fans. Who doesn't want to see the duo once again rocking out to "Bohemian Rhapsody"?

2. Target Lady

Kristen Wiig’s Target Lady remains one of her most iconic and beloved SNL characters. Though the anniversary special had a packed lineup, fans couldn’t help but miss her quirky and utterly bizarre interactions with customers at the checkout. A classic, for sure, and a real missed opportunity for a laugh-out-loud moment.

3. The Californians

While we did get a fun commercial with Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Kristen Wiig for Volkswagen, the hilarious Californians sketch was noticeably absent from the special. Despite their busy schedules, it would have been amazing to see the trio reprise their exaggerated, valley-girl personas in a classic SNL sketch. Unfortunately, Bill Hader had a prior scheduling conflict, as reported earlier.

4. Church Lady

It was great to see Dana Carvey return, but his signature Church Lady character was, sadly, missing from the anniversary special. Carvey’s sassy, politically-charged Church Lady could have brought her famous "Well, isn't that special?" catchphrase to a whole new generation of viewers. It was definitely one of the moments fans were hoping for.

5. Whiskers R We

Another hilarious Kristen Wiig collaboration with Kate McKinnon was their iconic Whiskers R We sketch. The feline-loving duo Barbara DeDrew and Furonica (pronounced like "Veronica, but how a cat would say it") were a hilarious pair of cat adoption advocates with a fun twist. While bringing live animals into the mix may have been chaotic, it would’ve been worth it for the sheer joy of seeing these two interact.

6. NPR’s Delicious Dish

With Alec Baldwin in attendance, the absence of a classic NPR’s Delicious Dish sketch was certainly felt. Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon’s portrayal of Margaret Jo McCullin and Terry Rialto, respectively, provided many iconic moments over the years. And let's not forget Pete Schweddy, Baldwin’s character, known for his infamous Schweddy Balls. What a missed opportunity for an absurdly funny sketch!

7. Spartan Cheerleaders

Fans of Cheri Oteri and Will Ferrell couldn’t help but feel nostalgic for their hilarious Spartan Cheerleader characters. Craig and Arianna were staples of the SNL cheerleading squad and would have been the perfect duo to bring fresh energy and new routines to the 50th-anniversary special. Their infectious energy would have been a highlight for sure.

8. Gumby

Though it was fantastic to see Eddie Murphy back on Studio 8H, many fans were disappointed that he didn’t reprise his take on the beloved Gumby character. Sure, Gumby has made appearances in the past, but there’s no denying that Eddie Murphy’s Gumby could have provided some new, hilarious material. With all that’s happened in the world since his last appearance, Murphy's Gumby character could have had plenty to complain about.

The SNL 50th Anniversary Special was packed with incredible moments, but some iconic sketches and characters simply couldn’t make the cut. From Wayne's World to Target Lady, fans were left wishing for more of the sketches that defined SNL’s legacy. Here’s hoping these fan-favorite SNL characters make a return in future specials!
