A Cultural Icon: The Legacy of Doraemon

Doraemon is one of the most iconic Japanese manga and anime series ever created by Fujiko F. Fujio. Since its debut in 1969, the series has grown into a cultural phenomenon in Japan, with multiple anime adaptations, movies, and merchandise. The first Doraemon TV anime was produced in 1973 by Nippon TV but was canceled after only 26 episodes due to poor ratings.

In 1979, Shin-Ei Animation produced a second version of the anime, which became the beloved series that popularized Doraemon. This version ran until 2005, with over 1,700 episodes and became known for its classic character designs and the gadget-of-the-day format. The first 25 Doraemon movies were based on this version.

The 2005 reboot of the anime, known as the ‘third version’, marked a new era for the series, with updated animation and a new voice cast. The movies starting from the 26th, Doraemon: Nobita’s Dinosaur (2006), which was a remake of the first movie, are based on this newer version of the series.
