On October 7, Hayao Miyazaki's animated film THE BOY AND THE HERON will be available for streaming on Netflix globally. Japan and the US are not included in this (the film is already accessible on Max in the US). They also unveiled a trailer with an English dubbing:
The animation was handled by Studio Ghibli, and Hayao Miyazaki directed this film for the first time since The Wind Rises in 2013. Since its July 2023 debut, it has won numerous accolades, including the Best Animated Feature Oscar and the Best Animated Film British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) award.
Japan saw the first release of THE BOY AND THE HERON in July 2023. The 1937 novel How Do You Live? by Yoshino Genzaburo served as the basis for the movie, but it also included aspects of Miyazaki's personal life in addition to the original work. Fans in New York first saw it at the 61st New York Film Festival, but it made its international debut at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
The film's official synopsis:
After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his
family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events
lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray
heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray
heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living
and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his
guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth
about himself.
