The Apothecary Diaries Unveils August Visual with Xiaolan and Maomao

For the month of August, the Apothecary Diaries anime unveiled a unique summer image that showed Maomao and Xiaolan in a sunflower field. The anime is presently in development for its second season.

Two manga adaptations of the series exist: one penned by Itsuki Nanao and drawn by Nekokurage, and the other by Minoji Kurata. Whereas the latter is published by Shogakukan and serialised in Monthly Sunday Gene-X, the former is published by Square Enix and appears in Monthly GanGan.

A brief mini-anime series titled Maomao's Diaries (Maomao no Hitorigoto) is also available. The primary character of Maomao's Diaries, Maomao, provides explanations for the significant objects displayed in the regular episodes.

J-Novel Club is the license holder and digital publisher of the Apothecary Diaries light novel series. Square Enix is the publisher and license holder of the manga adaption. In May 2024, they started releasing hard copies of the English light novel series.

Crunchyroll is currently offering the first season of The Apothecary Diaries anime for streaming, with both dubbing and English subtitles. It has been reported that the second season will be available on the platform early in 2019. They explain the narrative as follows:

Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she’s sold as a lowly servant to the emperor’s palace. But she wasn’t meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when the imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure catching the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her. Now, she’s making a name for herself solving medical mysteries.
