The second season of the anime was revealed at the 30th Dengeki Bunko Summer Festival in July 2023. The first season ran for a total of 12 episodes during the Spring 2018 anime season. The sequel will once again be directed by Masayuki Sakoi. Earlier this year, at Anime Japan, the first image was unveiled.

The light novel series Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online (Sodo Ato Onrain Orutanatibu Gangeiru Onrain) by Keiichi Sigsawa served as the inspiration for the anime. The manga adaptation, which has drawings by Tadadi Tamori, was serialised by ASCII Media Works from December 2015 to January 2021. The light novel has been licensed by ASCII Media Works.
