Blue Giant Movie Arriving in September at Netflix

Beginning on September 1, the anime film Blue Giant will be available for streaming on Netflix in the United States and Canada. The film, which was directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa and animated by studio NUT, had its debut in 2023. The Blu-ray edition was published earlier this year by GKIDS.

The characters were designed by Yuichi Takahashi, and NUMBER 8 wrote the screenplay. The soundtrack was composed by Hiromi Uehara. This was the first independent film produced by the company (the Saga of Tanya the Evil Movie was animated in 2019). Director Tachikawa advised viewers to try seeing the Blue Giant movie with the best sound setting in order to fully enjoy the experience in an interview with Anime Corner.

The narrative of Blue Giant centres on Dai Miyamoto, who discovers jazz and knows he has found his true purpose. For professional purposes, he relocates to Tokyo. He meets Yukinori Sawabe there, who has a comparable desire. Together with Shunji Tamada, a buddy from Dai's high school, the two create the band JASS. Among the cast are:

  • Yuki Yamada as Dai Miyamoto
  • Shotaro Mamiya as Yukinori Sawabe
  • Amane Okayama as Shunji Tamada

The Blue Giant manga by Shinichi Ishizuka, which was serialised in Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine from 2013 to 2016, served as the inspiration for the film. The ten-volume original manga was followed by several sequels, including Blue Giant Explorer (9 volumes; 2020–2023), Blue Giant Supreme (11 volumes; 2016–2020), and the ongoing Blue Giant Momentum. The Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize and the Shogakukan Manga Award have both been given to the series. The manga (without the sequels) was published in English by Seven Seas.
