Toei Animation first produced a TV anime for the Mononoke series, which ran for 12 episodes from July to September 2007. It was directed by Kenji Nakamura, and the screenplay was written by Michiko Yokote (episode 12), Manabu Ishikawa (episodes 6-7), Chiaki Konaka (episodes 3-5, 8-9), and Ikuko Takahashi (episodes 1-2, 10-11). Four manga adaptations were made for the series: Mononoke -Umibozu- for the second one in 2014, Mononoke -Zashiki Warashi- for the third in 2015, and Mononoke -Nue- for the fourth in 2016. There were also two stage play versions published.
Twin Engine describes the plot as:
Appearing out of nowhere where
the Mononoke is born, he slashes, exorcises, calms, and saves the
Mononoke—a mysterious man, the “Medicine Seller.” This time, Medicine
Seller appears in the “Ooku” where women’s grudges swirl. What is the
real nature of the “female grudges” that hide in the world of
gorgeousness and majestic beauty, and the “Mononoke” that is born there?
