One Piece Creator Announces Jujutsu Kaisen's Junya Fukuda as New Editor

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has officially confirmed the appointment of Junya Fukuda, the talented editor behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Black Clover, as the new editor for the iconic manga series. This change follows the departure of Kaito Anayama, who served as One Piece's editor from February 2023 to January 2025. Oda shared the update through VIZ’s Mangaka Musings, stating, "I got a new editor! Thanks for everything, Anayama-san! Welcome to the team, Fukuda-san!"

Junya Fukuda Takes Over as One Piece’s New Editor

Fukuda’s appointment marks a significant shift for One Piece, one of the most popular manga series of all time. Oda’s announcement was straightforward, and he welcomed the new editor with excitement: "My manga editor has changed! Iwasaki-san, thank you for a wonderful three years! Anayama-san, let’s get to work!" This change comes after a noteworthy period for Anayama, who had taken over editorial duties in 2023.

Fans Recall Anayama’s Big Reveal on Kamaitachi's Variety Show

Fans of One Piece may recall a viral moment when Anayama appeared on Kamaitachi’s variety show, revealing that he knew the ending of the series. Ironically, Fukuda also appeared on the same show, making a similar claim about knowing the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen. This shared moment highlights Fukuda’s deep involvement in the manga industry and his extensive experience in working with high-profile series.

How Fukuda's Role Could Impact One Piece's Future

While many editors, including prominent figures like Kazuhiko Torishima (known for editing Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump), are highly visible, others like Fukuda typically remain behind the scenes. His background as an editor for Jujutsu Kaisen and Black Clover has earned him significant recognition, but how his editorial direction will influence One Piece remains to be seen, especially given the series' monumental length and established success.

An editor's role in the Weekly Shonen Jump editorial department is multifaceted. Editors manage various responsibilities, from ensuring deadlines are met to providing creative input on storylines. They also play a crucial role in the relationship between the manga creator and the anime production teams. For instance, Fukuda's work on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 earned him credit for Planning Cooperation, alongside other key editorial members.

The Critical Role of Editors in Shaping Manga Series

In the world of Shonen manga, an editor's role extends beyond just assisting with deadlines. Editors help broaden the creator's worldview, offer creative suggestions, and sometimes even handle personal matters that could affect the manga’s progress. An example of this was when Shihei Lin, an editor at Shonen Jump+, sent Yukinobu Tatsu, the creator of Dandadan, 100 copies of shoujo manga to inspire his drawing of a romantic comedy.

Fukuda’s work as an editor for Jujutsu Kaisen demonstrated his ability to manage complex responsibilities and contributed to the anime's massive success. Now, with his transition to One Piece, fans are eager to see how his editorial experience will impact the ongoing saga of Monkey D. Luffy and his quest for the legendary One Piece treasure.

Catch One Piece on Manga PLUS and Shonen Jump App

As One Piece continues its journey under Fukuda's editorial guidance, fans can follow the series on Manga PLUS and the Shonen Jump app. The official One Piece description reads:
“As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer Red-Haired Shanks. But Luffy’s life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber… at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the King of the Pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure… one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary ‘One Piece,’ said to be the greatest treasure in the world…”
