About The Colors Within – A Story of Emotions and Music
Directed by Naoko Yamada (whom we had the privilege to interview), and produced by Science SARU, The Colors Within follows Totsuko, a high schooler with a unique ability to see people’s emotions as colors. Along with her friends Kimi and Rui, Totsuko forms a band despite not playing an instrument herself. The trio practices in an old church on a remote island, discovering the power of music to forge emotional connections and navigate the complexities of adolescence.
The film premiered at the prestigious Annecy International Film Festival, where its debut screening sold out, and it later went on to win the Best Animation Film Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The movie made its U.S. theatrical debut on January 24 via GKIDS, continuing to receive praise for its stunning animation and evocative storytelling.
