Ranma 1/2 Remake Unveils Five Significant Cast Members

Five more cast members, all of whom are well-known voice actors, have been made public for the Ranma 1/2 anime remake. Getting involved with the anime are:

  • Tomokazu Sugita as Tatewaki Kuno
  • Ayane Sakura as Kodachi Kuno
  • Toshiyuki Morikawa as Tofu Ono
  • Mamoru Miyano as Mikado Sanzenin
  • Aoi Yuki as Azusa Shiratori

More than 30 years have passed since the conclusion of the first anime adaptation. The news was made soon after the conclusion of the rerun of URUSEI YATSURA, another adaptation of the renowned mangaka Rumiko Takahashi. The previously unveiled trailer is also available to watch with English subtitles.

After URUSEI YATSURA and Maison Ikkoku, Rumiko started the Ranma 1/2 as her third major series in August 1987. Up until March 1996, the manga was published in serial form in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine. It was published in 38 volumes, with a total of 407 chapters. The manga was licensed in English by VIZ Media.

The story follows martial artist Ranma Saotome and his father Genma, who end up falling into a cursed spring and getting cursed: Ranma turns into a girl whenever he’s splashed with cold, while his father turns into a panda. Plenty of martial arts follows in the comedy series, with Akane, Ranma’s arranged fiancée, also not exactly being a fan of the whole situation.

The original anime version was animated by Studio Deen and ran for two seasons: Ranma 1/2 and Ranma 1/2 Nettohen. Together, the two anime series aired 161 episodes from 1989 and 1992. It also released three films and twelve OVAs. 2011 saw the release of a live-action TV special for the franchise.
